The fundamentals of awareness campaign aims to teach cyclists to increase their detectability and stand out when it matters.

The fundamentals of awareness campaign consists of three parts.

1- ALWAYS ON. Using day time running lights has proven to have a 33% reduction in daytime collisions. Front and rear daytime running lights significantly increase detectability on the road, and with 80% of accidents occuring during daylight hours, here at Cycle Centre Newcastle we believe daytime running lights are key to reducing the number of accidents on British roads.

So what makes a day time running light?

FOCUS- By controlling the output of the light, the beam can be intensified and its range is extended.

DAY FLASH- Most rear lights use a steady flashing pattern, however Bontrager Daytime Running Lights use an interrupted pulsating flash, which varies its intensity and pattern. This abnormal pattern is eye-catching for drivers, making you more visible.

RANGE- A daytime running light must be visible from at least 400 meters, or quarter of a mile. A shorter distance does not give ample time for drivers to react.

The following Bontrager lights are all Daytime Running Lights;

Highlight your body's moving parts!
Highlighting the moving parts that make you recognisable as human, your feet and legs, makes you more visible to drivers. Wearing fluorescent clothing during the daylight, and reflective material at night, has great visual impact. Cyclists that effectively draw attention to their moving parts are up to 83% more noticeable to drivers, so why wouldn't you want to.

Make sure you choose the right gear for the day.
Visibility relies on contrast. Fluorescent clothing is effective throughout the day when the sun's shining as it helps us to stand out from the environment around us. But without the sun, fluorescent clothing blends in, and is no more effective than darker clothing.
When it comes to clothing, at night, reflective clothing is your only friend. Studies have shown that reflective clothing at night makes you 72% more noticeable, and as such further reduces your chances of having an accident.
